Boston University has become the most recent member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an elite organization of 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada, founded in 1900. BU is the fourth university to be invited into the AAU since 2000, joining Boston’s Harvard, MIT, and Brandeis.

Alpha Phi Sigma

The national criminal justice honor society, Alpha Phi Sigma, recognizes BU’s MCJ program for its academic excellence; the Nu Mu chapter was chartered May 2012 at Boston University. Alpha Phi Sigma is the only criminal justice honor society certified as a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and affiliated with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.


Boston University is proud to be a member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), one of six regional accrediting organizations in the United States.

Sloan Consortium Award

A decade of innovation and unwavering quality led to the Sloan Consortium Award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Online Education in 2010, an exceptional honor that annually recognizes the most outstanding university trailblazers in online education. This prestigious award recognizes BU as an institution with a student-centered and faculty-directed online learning curriculum that is consistent with the high standards of the on-campus experience.


The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) presented Boston University with the 2011 International Distance Learning Award for 21st Century Best Practice, the world’s most prestigious distance learning award for excellence in distance learning. This award underscores the University’s leadership and acknowledges BU as a pioneering organization that has transformed distance learning and achieved extraordinary results.
